34 dengue hotspots now

SUNGAI PETANI: The number of dengue hotspots has increased to 34, with Selangor having 17, which is the highest in the country.

The other states with high number of cases are Johor (six) and Sarawak (five).

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said health officers would act against property owners if their premises were

“Our officers have found Aedes mosquito larvae in 50% to 60% of the homes of patients down with dengue.

“Many of the cases were in urban areas, including housing schemes,” he said after visiting the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here yesterday.

Liow said offenders would be compounded a maximum of RM300 per offence while repeat offenders would be taken to court.

From January to July 24, he said there were 27,415 dengue cases reported, including 91 fatalities.

Liow also announced that the ministry would soon equip the hospital with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine.

At another function, Liow ticked off the Health Department for imposing unnecessary “red tape” when issuing licences for dialysis centres run by non-governmental organisations.

Liow said the officers should issue the licences promptly once the organisations met the ministry’s basic requirements.

“If the centres have qualified persons-in-charge with good quality service, properly treated water supply and clean environment, there is no reason why the licences cannot be issued on time,” he said when visiting the Beng Siew Dialysis Centre.

Liow said a few dialysis centres in Kedah faced such problems and because of that they were unable to receive subsidies from the Government.

At the re-launching of the Sungai Petani MCA division’s service centre in Taman Intan, Liow urged MCA members to prepare early for the next general election.

Liow, who is also party deputy president, said that apart from providing service to the people, they must go to the ground to get to know them better.

“This is very important for us to understand their needs and give them political leadership,” he said.
